Tapeworms are also scientifically named Dipylidium caninum. They are just one of the five kinds of worms that pets may get infested with.

The “tapeworm” name comes from the shape of this parasite. This worm looks like a flat tape that measure between 50and 70cm in length. This tapeworm gets attached to the intestines of the dog.

There he feeds on the animal. The good thing about this tape worm is that humans can not get it just from direct contact with the pet. The pets usually get this parasite up by eating infected fleas. So, it is better to prevent and treat the pet for flees form time to time.

Diagnosis and Symptoms

The tapeworms are quite easy to detect and they are common. Some of the main symptoms include loss of weight and appetite, a bit of nervousness, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea.

The tapeworms in dogs are sometimes visible. You can still find some worms or pieces of them around the anus and in fecal matter. If the feces look like having some rice in them, that means the dog is infested.

The Treatment

Before treatment, first come prevention measures. Make sure the dog is treated from fleas from time to time. This will make sure the dog doesn’t get infested. The treatment for the tapeworms has two stages of severity. The early stage, less severe, means the dog is still full of energy and is playful. In this case, a simple over the counter de-worming treatment will easily clean out the parasite in many cases.

A very common medicine for treating the tapeworms is the Praziquantel (Droncit) and can be bought from the local pet stores.

During the later and the severe stage of tapeworms#146; infestation, the pet has signs of acute distress, is quite inactive and has lost some weight. Take the pet straight to the professional veterinarian. In this case, the vet will give the pet an injection or a liquid-based chemical to be ingested.

No matter what the stage is, you have to pay attention to the feces and make sure there are no tapeworms there. Even after treatment, notice the feces and monitor any symptoms of infestation that may appear.

Never forget that the best way to get away from a tapeworm infestation is to prevent them from reaching your dogs. Besides constant fleas#146; treatment, make sure you don’t leave your dog in places where the living conditions are not right or there are no people to take care of the pet.

Also make sure your pet mingles with other pets that are healthy. Don#146;t let the pet get next to pets that show signs of illnesses or have a poor hygiene./pp class=”articletext”/pp class=”articletext” Learn more about a href=”http://www.tapewormsindogs.net” target=”_blank”tapeworms in dogs/a, a href=”http://www.tapewormsindogs.net/tapeworms-in-dogs-causes.php” target=”_blank”causes of tapeworms in dogs/a and effective a href=”http://www.tapewormsindogs.net/tapeworms-in-dogs-treatment.php” target=”_blank”treatment for tapeworms in dogs/a at TapeWormsInDogs.Net /p

Building Your Own Dog Agility Training Equipment

Image by SheltieBoy via Flickr Agility competitions are becoming more and more popular at dog shows, and are even beginning to replace many of the traditional shows. These competitions involve owners leading their dogs around an obstacle course as quickly as possible. A lot of training takes place before these events, and many people spend months preparing for even a single competition. However, because the obstacles used in agility competitions are not exactly everyday objects, many people find it difficult to train their dogs on a regular basis. In order to get around this problem, many ...

Dog Agility Training Equipment and Obstacles

Image by zteamie via FlickrDog agility competitions are very popular events since they first started sometime in the 1970s. These events are modeled after equestrian events, where horses run and jump around various obstacles. Dog agility competitions are very similar, but because of the greater mobility and constitution of dogs, there are far more obstacles to navigate. The most common obstacle, directly borrowed from agility training's like to equestrian events is the jump. These obstacles come in a variety of styles, from a single bar to multiple, and even the tire jump, which requires dogs to jump through ...

Buying Dog Agility Training Equipment

Image via Wikipedia Agility training events are becoming quite popular events, both for owners and for the dogs involved. These competitions involve an owner guiding their canine companion through a series of different obstacles in an order defined by the judges. Because the objects used in agility events are not common, everyday objects, it is necessary to expose your dog to these different obstacles well in advance of your event. In order to do that, you need to either build, or buy your own agility equipment. While you will save some money in building the ...

Buying Used Dog Agility Equipment

Image via WikipediaBecause of the high cost of getting involved with a sport like dog agility training, it is essential to save money whenever possible. One of the best methods of doing so is by purchasing used equipment and obstacles. If you choose to go with this option, however, keep in mind that you should still be spending your money on quality products, and that an obstacle in too poor of condition may be dangerous for your dog. Some used agility equipment, especially larger pieces like the A frame and the see-saw has been stored outdoors by their owners. ...

Dog Agility Starter Kits

Dog agility training can be an expensive sport to get involved in. These events involve large obstacle courses that dogs must traverse, and the vast majority of these objects are not everyday items. As such, it is imperative that you expose your dogs to these different objects if you intend to do well in the competition. Buying all these objects is costly for even the deepest pockets, but you can alleviate some of the cost by purchasing a dog agility starter kit. Starter kits will not have the larger objects, like see-saws or A frames, but they will ...
